I have always loved finger foods, appetizers, hors-d’oeuvres, whatever you want to call them. These taco sliders fit perfectly into this designation of party food for me.
These taste great, they’re easy to make and are a perfect size. One isn’t so filling that you don’t have room for all of the other appetizers being served but it has a little more subsistence to it, which I like. I don’t feel like I’m eating a bunch of junk food.
These tasty sliders are perfect for the big game, get-togethers or to eat all by yourself 😉
Tasty Taco Sliders
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1/4 cup salsa
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs (I use panko)
- 1/4 cup taco seasoning
- pepper jack cheese, sliced
- prebaked dinner rolls or mini slider buns
- Optional toppings:
- tasty sliders slaw (recipe below)
- sour cream
- thinly sliced red onion
In a large bowl combine beef, salsa and bread crumbs. Be careful not to overwork the meat, otherwise, it gets tough. I find using my hands works best to fold in the ingredients. If you have an aversion to touching raw meat I recommend you use gloves like these.
After everything is mixed in you will want to form patties. You will want to form the patties to be a little larger than the bun to allow for shrinkage so they are a perfect size. I also like to push my thumb into the center of the patty, giving a small indent (at least half as thick as the patty). This helps the patty to cook flat instead of bubbling up in the middle.
Fry in a skillet, bake or grill until cooked to the desired temperature. These do seem to cook faster than a regular sized hamburger so be aware of that.
Top burgers with pepper jack cheese and cover with a lid (or return to oven/grill) long enough for the cheese to melt.
Assemble your tasty sliders, adding Tex-Mex style toppings vs. traditional condiments.
Tips for your Taco Sliders:
- If you’re going to a tailgating party mix up the meat beforehand or even form into patties, cover and refrigerate until you’re ready to grill at the big game.
- Potluck style – grill patties before going but keep them warm in a roasting oven (without the buns on). Bring the fixin’s and let them assemble the burgers how they want – like a salad bar or “topping bar”
- Going low carb? These are also a great wrap since they are not huge. You could also turn them into a salad like my Turkey Burger Salad.
Tasty Sliders Slaw
- 10 – 12 oz coleslaw mix
- 2 green onions, sliced (white & green part)
- 1/2 cup cilantro
- zest and juice of one lime
- 3/4 tsp cumin
- 1/2 – 1 tsp hot sauce (I like Cholula)
- salt and pepper to taste
This is a simple, straightforward dish. Add all ingredients together, stir until mixed well. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use. I like to use this zester for citrus fruits (it also works great on hard cheeses like Parmesan).
