Making a green smoothie was one of the first steps I took in my journey of self-care and self-love.

I started with green smoothies as a way to add more vegetables to my diet.  I use to find veggies to be very bland and boring, especially leafy greens!  For me, this was the perfect alternative to a salad, a way for me to get several servings of vegetables in each day.  I have since grown to love vegetables, and I love the way they make me feel on the inside & outside.  Loving the nutrients and energy they provide my body.  And how they help me take care of myself!

After that, I started adding a high-quality protein powder to a green smoothie.  My preference is USANA Health Sciences Nutrimeal because it isn’t just protein powder but a nutritionally balanced meal replacement that provides the perfect ratio of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.  Plus it is low-glycemic so it helps you sustain energy, satiety, and curb cravings.

Having the meal replacement versus just a protein powder is nice because it is the perfect way to start your day right or it can be a great time saver at lunch too!

How To Create The Perfect Green Smoothie

Try not to get too caught up in a specific recipe, though.  I want you to play around with it and sub in what you love.  Here is my method of constructing the perfect green smoothie.

You really want 2-3 large handfuls of any leafy green, with about a cup of fruit and some source of protein (like a protein powder or peanut butter).  Add a tablespoon or two of a healthy fat like nuts, seeds, coconut oil, avocado, etc.  You will also need to make sure you add some liquid in order for the blender to work properly.  In the recipe below I get most of my liquid from the cucumbers so if you don’t use a veg with a high water content you might need to add a little more liquid than I did.  I often enjoy adding unsweetened almond milk or unsweetened coconut milk instead of water. Plus some ice, so it is cool and refreshing.

You can always add extras in also.  Not only extra vegetables like carrot, cucumbers, or celery but also things like citrus zest, herbs, ginger or spices like turmeric are all great add-ins.

Green Smoothie with Protein:

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 carrot
  • 2-3 handfuls kale or spinach
  • 1 serving protein powder, I use USANA Nutrimeal
  • 2 cucumbers
  • 1 apple
  • 1/2 of a banana
  • 1 Tbs chia or flax seeds
  • a few drops of liquid stevia (optional)
  • 2 c ice

Blend water & carrots until smooth (if you don’t have a high-powered blender you might want to leave the carrot out).  Add kale, Nutrimeal, cucumbers, apple, banana, & chia seeds and blend until smooth.  Taste test the smoothie, if you need additional sweetness add the stevia now then add the ice and blend again until smooth.

I really enjoy adding cucumbers to my smoothies in the summer months because my garden is producing them in mass and I need to get them used. They also have a high nutrition content, they are high in antioxidants, highly anti-inflammatory and highly hydrating so they carry quite the bang for your buck!

I usually also add 1/2 of a banana because it helps the smoothie with sweetness as well as making it more creamy and less “juicy”.  If I happen to be out of banana I like adding about 1/4 of an avocado in for the creaminess and fat.
