The instant hot cocoa mixes are so convenient but let’s be honest they have a lot of sugar in them! That is why I like to make my own. I include a special ingredient so that the hot cocoa doesn’t just warm me up but it nourishes me too!
Healthy High-Protein Hot Cocoa Mix
- 1 c. high-quality protein powder (I use USANA Health Sciences)
- 1/2 c. – 1 c. coconut palm sugar (I use closer to 1/2c. because I don’t need it to be super sweet)
- 1/4 c. unsweetened cocoa (I prefer the dark cocoa)
- 1/2 c. dark chocolate chips (or use semi-sweet)
- pinch of salt
I throw all of the above ingredients into a blender or food processor to make sure it gets good and mixed plus it pulverizes the chocolate chips which helps it melt better in the hot liquid. Store in an airtight container until ready to use.
To use: you just want to warm up 6-8 oz of liquid. I like to use unsweetened coconut milk or any kind of nut milk. You could also use water. Add 2 rounded tablespoons of the hot cocoa mix and stir.
You can make these into cute little gifts for teachers or neighbors. I like using little mason jars, with a pretty ribbon and instructions on it. Or something fun like these jars. I often have friends and neighbors stop by throughout the month of December with little goodies and gifts so these are nice to have on hand to give them a little something special too!
